Persistence of Memory

Persistence of Memory

This artwork was created by Salvador Dali in 1931. The surreal painting itself depicts our mental state when dreaming. Specifically, the melting clocks in the painting represent the uselessness and lack of importance of the normal concept of time in the dream state. This is again highlighted through the incorporation of ants to represent the decay and deterioration of time. The title is ironic in that the clocks and time are not actually persistent and instead are losing power. We chose this artwork because we wanted the challenge of physically representing a surreal painting. The distortion of the painting intrigued our curious minds and inspired us to portray this decay and uselessness of time that is depicted in the painting. We chose to modernize it by replacing the clocks with our bodies in order to add a humorous and comical element to contrast it with the otherwise dark meaning behind the original painting.
