Welcome to a collection of “good eats” for Baltimore Vegetarians and curious Omnivores. Each restaurant, café, food truck or general eatery is fairly local and filled with good vibes and a rad art scene. Tune in twice a month for a Beet Down on my new finds and old favorites.

Let’s Taco Bout Food Baby

Today’s beet down is one of my personal favorites, a western themed café in the heart of Hamden. This vegetarian and vegan friendly café is none other than Golden West. On first impression this bustling café is a Hodge podge of art, fairy lights, and taxidermy!

The giant murals and exposed pipes are accented by refurbished furniture adding to the thrift shop chic aesthetic. But the star of the show is the fairy light (and occasional hat) adorned moose head that hangs over the main dining area.

Golden West also offers a walk through window for coffee, tacos, waffles, and more on the go. This is great for a cup of coffee without the wait of a table, or a waffle before work. My go-to coffee is the log cabin latte, a smoky late with maple undertones that is the liquid form of wearing a flannel. My close second is their Nutella mocha, coco haze. A great fix for that chocolate craving.

If the eccentric décor and coffee window wasn’t enough, you’ll be entranced by the food. Not only do they accommodate and specialize in vegan and vegetarian dining, they excel! From breakfast to dinner the options are endless on the back of a 45 record sleeve. I am obsessed with their Aztec Burrito.

All dishes are easily made vegetarian with their house faux-rizo. This burrito is a bundle of sweet and spicy with plantains and Christmas Chile sauce complimenting the corn and black bean classics. This dish would not be complete without the savory grilled squash and cheddar jack cheese. If your mouth isn’t already watering head over for the epic vibe and stay for the incredible food!
